Will the Trends Buyers Loved in 2021 be the same in 2022: A Recap of Last Year’s Top 3 Outdoor Trends

In 2021, Fixr.com conducted a study to know the in-demand trends in homes. Participating in their 2021 Outdoor Living Spaces Trends study were real estate professionals. 85% of them conclude that during the year, homeowners are more open to investing in outdoor spaces. Moving on to the most desired outdoor additions, outdoor kitchens are the most popular home feature that attracts buyers, garnering 61% of votes, next comes the fire pits at 59%, and shading at 41% [1].

Outdoor Kitchens

Outdoor kitchens are indeed attractive. After all, having both an indoor and outdoor kitchen only creates more opportunities for entertaining guests, bringing family and friends together through food. The convenience of having your cooking equipment readily available without having to go back inside and saving the hassle of carrying food in and out of the home is also a plus of an outdoor kitchen.

Brought about by the pandemic, outdoor dining became extremely popular as it is essential and this has been translated into our own spaces as well, with the outdoor kitchen being a luxurious amenity [2 & 3]. With Covid restrictions easing all around the country, will this remain in the Top 3 Outdoor trends for this year?

Fire pits

Of course, to enjoy the outdoors even in the colder weather, fire pits are a must! With one present, your backyard offers a multi-season space while adding that cozy and inviting feel to your backyard. It can even be a dual purpose: serving as a source of heat AND can be used for cooking hotdogs or roasting marshmallows [4].

Shading

With 41% of votes, shading structures placed third. Outdoor shading has great benefits. It helps keep your outdoor furniture and equipment cool from the sun, and added roofing can help keep them protected from the rain or snow. Added shading attached to your home’s exterior wall can also feature added cooling to your interiors, which will help lower your electric bill costs in hotter months.

It’s perfect for those who loves spending time and relaxing in the backyard, especially if it’s covered– snow, rain, or shine.

Increase in Value

These outdoor features were able to add value to homes. Can you believe that based on a study by Realm, a fire pit has over 500% ROI, whereas a pergola has over 120% ROI [5]? Meanwhile, the ROI on outdoor kitchens differs, with an estimate of 60% from HomeAdvisor [6].
